requires learner to have developed time management skills
monitoring/tracking of each individual student can be time consuming for teacher
logistical challenges of large class sizes
noise levels (some teachers and students just find this too problematic)
school budget constraints
constant monitoring, management and maintenance of the space is crucial for success and effectiveness of learning
can be a difficult space for students (and teachers!!) who are disrupted easily
Design plan needs to allow for breakout, chill out and individual study zones
For teachers:
risk of technology issues, that can/usually do occur at the most inconvenient of times!
teachers need to constantly keep up with current ICT practices and P.D. in technology
cyber-safety
teachers need to prep students in Netiquette practices and ensure these are enforced
For students:
lack of structure can be problematic for some students
risk of "gamification" of the curriculum
cyber-safety issues always a priority
risk of too much "screen-time" on devices
Requires intense planning, preparation and organization by teachers
risk assessment, safety considerations
requires extra adult supervision/helpers especially with the younger year levels
often involves costs - transport; admissions; meals; activities - to both school, and generally to parents as well
some students can find the change in routine, environment, hard to manage, and can result in behaviour issues
not all students can work successfully or effectively in this space - teacher monitoring should be ongoing, with changes made as required
for teachers - assessment of student progess can be challenging
risk of extroverted/dominant personalities in the group controlling the space, lessening the learning experience for others
noise level can be problematic for some students (and teachers!)
requires space in the physical environment of the classroom, so groups can co-exist, and real learning takes place
moving from knowing to not knowing can cause the learner to feel uncomfortable, and frustrated in this space, which can close them off to learning opportunities
Teachers need to be mindful o f how students inhabiting this space are managing, and ensure they feel supported, and are given time to "be" in this space, and embark on new learning when they are ready
Learners can lose the motivation to learn or move forward if not supported adequately
